One of the preventive methods that can be done when the permanent back teeth newly come out in the mouth is by placing dental sealants. It is usually done on children from 6-14 years old to protect the pits and fissures of the tooth where it is most susceptible to developing decay. It is cleaned really well by disinfecting the site, then it is etched, bonded and painted with dental sealant material that is hardened by a light source. It stays on there for a few years until such a time that the child can be more responsible for maintaining his or her oral hygiene. Some sealants also contain fluoride that is released over time to prevent decay from starting.
