Frenulectomy is the removal of a small fold of tissue that prevents the lips or the tongue from moving normally. The small folds of tissue found in between the two front teeth are usually removed in cases where gaps between cannot be closed or when dentures are made that prevents its stability. This procedure is called Labial frenectomy. When the tongue is restricted in its movement because of a condition called ankyloglossia, a lingual frenectomy can be done. These procedures can be performed by surgical cutting or by the use of carbon dioxide lasers.
